Wow ! I’m a winner of a major song contest !
On Tuesday June 5 an email dropped into my Inbox from the folks at the Hollywood USA Songwriting contest saying “Always Reminders” had been voted winner of the folk section in the 2017 awards. I am so chuffed to get this sort of recognition for my craft from professional music judges.
“Always Reminders” is a song about the images and emotions you see and feel going through a family photo album. It’s one of the best songs I’ve written and seems to have connected with radio listeners all over the world.
I know my song was up against quality entries in a very popular category not just from the USA but from all over the world.
The news came while I was at a songwriting camp at Halsway Manor in Somerset with top singer songwriters Boo Hewerdine (UK) and Darden Smith (USA). They were absolutely delighted for me as were members of the group I was working with.
I performed the winning song for them and it was great to hear their applause to make a special day even more memorable.
Always Reminders reached the semi finals of the UK Songwriting Contest in 2017. “Soft White and Amber” got a special commendation in the same contest.
It also means I’ve gone one better than 2015 when “Completely Yours” reached the finals of the Hollywood Song Contest’xs folk section.
There’s no cash prize for the award , nor sadly do I get to pick it up in person by flying to LA ! Right now the important thing for me is knowing all the years of hard work have paid off.
It also means my decision to scrap first recorded version of “Always Reminders” and completely re-write the song was a pretty good call 🙂
Onwards and upwards !
